In Delabart’s version one can see clearly the influence of earlier players such as Tata Pereira and Miguel Vazquez Tuero (‘El Moro’) in that he prefers the more dotted habanera/tango rhythm (example 5.17: bars 42 and 43) where Fajardo, in contrast, uses even eighth-notes (example 5.18).

The same passage played by Fajardo demonstrates the generational difference in terms of style; turn-of-the-century players came from a contradanza tradition of habanera/tango and ragtime-style amphibrach rhythms, whereas players like Fajardo developed their style in the danzonete and ‘nuevo ritmo’ danzón traditions of the late 1930s and ’40s. The older contradanza rhythms did not disappear but they became less prominent in later players’ performances.
